CSJ offers Irish-inspired evening of stories and fare

Thursday, March 12 at 5:30 p.m. — RUTLAND — Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, College of St. Joseph presents “An Irish Evening: Reading and Discussing a Short Story by James Joyce” at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at Rutland Free Library.

Enjoy Irish-inspired fare and refreshments with friends while listening to College of St. Joseph President Dr. Richard Lloyd read and discuss the short story “Eveline,” from iconic Irish author James Joyce’s “Dubliners.” A copy of “Eveline” will be provided for those in attendance.

Set in Ireland’s capital and current largest city, Joyce’s stories depict the Irish middle class in the early years of the 20th century. Written when Irish nationalism was at its peak, the collection tells the tales of young women who flee the country with sailors, college students desperately trying to fit in with their wealthy friends, and much more. Joyce spent more than a decade trying to get “Dubliners” published, often being denied by publishers due to the realism of the works. Joyce fought back in the name of art — and Ireland.

Lloyd’s academic background is in Irish literature and history, and he has taught Irish literature courses throughout his career.

This event is free and open to the public. For more info, 802-773-1860.
