Saturday, Aug. 13 at 7:30 p.m.—BRANDON—They Might Be Gypsies plays high-energy, uplifting music with tremendous passion. The musicians weave together the traditional sounds of early 20th century France with modern influences from Argentina to Barcelona. At the core, the group is comprised of father and son duo, Greg and Aidan Ryan, both exceptional guitarists. Hear the duo at Brandon Music on Aug. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
Greg grew up steeped in the musical traditions of his family, drawing inspiration from many genres. His playing expresses fire and passion mixed with sophistication and sensitivity. He is also known for playing in solo shows in the folk genre around New England, with the Queen City Hotclub out of Burlington and as a duo with Rani Arbo (of Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem, with whom Greg has toured nationally).
A truly gifted musician, Aidan, now in his early 20s, has been performing for audiences since he was 6 years old and recorded his first original music at 7. Dan Bolles of Seven Days said, “They Might Be Gypsies reveals a giant-in-waiting in teenage guitar phenom Aidan Ryan.”
The duo’s debut album came out in 2010 to rave reviews and was chosen by the Times Argus as Vermont’s Best Instrumental Album of the Year. The Times Argus called it “Intense, thoughtful and spirited music played very well.”
“Rendezvous,” their second album, was described by Seven Days as “…yet another striking collection of acoustic suites … sophisticated array of worldly influences, from hothouse swing and manouche to Latin-flavored rumba and Spanish flamenco—and even occasional hints of rock-and-roll snarl.”
