Paramount Theatre announces 2012-2013 season

The Paramount Theatre announced July 19, that they will unveil their most exciting and diverse season to date. More than two-dozen nationally recognized and internationally touring headlining acts will take to The Paramount stage in downtown Rutland from August to May.

"Bringing the very best in live entertainment to the central Vermont community is not only our responsibility but our passion," explained Eric Mallette, programming director. "To that note, we should take a moment to pause and reflect on what makes all of this possible; the countless contributors who believe in the mission of a healthy, vibrant performing arts center within a community - corporate donors, members and the hundreds of volunteers who help make this building 'tick.' Without this support, the growth that has been seen in this organization would not be possible."
In addition to the new season line-up, The Paramount Theatre will also be unveiling a brand-new ticketing system including an innovative, easier-to-use online ticketing portal. Patrons will be able to access the new online Box Office at the theatre's website, ParamountLive.org.
Tickets are available to the general public beginning July 26 online, by phone 802 775-0903 or at The Paramount Theatre Box Office at 30 Center Street, open Thurs.--Fri. 11a.m.-6 p.m. and Sat. 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

August schedule:

MUSIC SERIES

TRAVIS TRITT: August 11
Presented by 105.3 Cat Country. Tritt was one of the leading new country singers of the early '90s, holding his own against Garth Brooks, Clint Black, and Alan Jackson. He was the only one not to wear a hat and the only one to dip into bluesy Southern rock. Consequently, he developed a gutsy, outlaw image that distinguished him from the pack. Tritt's career has seen tremendous success with a string of platinum albums and Top Ten singles, including three number one hits! Hit's include: Great Day to Be Alive, Where Corn Don't Grow, Here's a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares), Best of Intentions, Anymore, I'm Gonna Be Somebody, Put Some Drive in Your Country, T-R-O-U-B-L-E, Take it Easy and many more.

MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER: September 13
Mary Chapin Carpenter has recorded 12 albums and has sold over 13 million records. With hits like 'Passionate Kisses' and 'He Thinks He'll Keep Her,' Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards (with 15 nominations), two CMA awards and two Academy of Country Music awards for her vocals. Her songs speak to the most personal of life's details and the most universal. Ashes and Roses is the follow-up to Carpenter's Grammy-nominated 2010 release, The Age of Miracles, which debuted at No. 28 on the Billboard 200 and No.1 on the Billboard Folk chart. The release also received widespread critical acclaim -- the Hartford Courant describes the album as, '...equal parts timely and timeless,' while The Huffington Post asserts, 'Carpenter writes songs that are nuanced and fully three-dimensional. It's music for the soul...'

BRUCE HORNSBY: September 29
Bruce Hornsby's work continues to display the same creative iconoclasm that's been a constant in the artist's two-and-a-half decade recording career. His commercial stock soared early on, when "The Way It Is"--the title track of Bruce Hornsby and the Range's 1986 debut album--became the most-played song on American radio in 1987, winning ASCAP's Song of the Year award. "The Way It Is" and such subsequent hits as "Mandolin Rain" and "Every Little Kiss," established Hornsby as popular pop act, while high-profile work with the likes of Don Henley, and Huey Lewis made him an in-demand collaborator

BIG HEAD TODD & THE MONSTERS: October 6
Unstoppable blues jams and a dizzyingly list of eclectic influences from Boulder's favorite sons. 25 years of constant touring and legendary live shows has cemented Big Head Todd and The Monsters as one of the finest bands in the biz. Colorado-based rock band Big Head Todd & the Monsters was formed in 1986 with Todd Park Mohr on guitar and vocals, Brian Nevin on drums and vocals, and Rob Squires on bass and vocals. Their album Sister Sweetly went platinum and spawned three singles that made the rock charts including "Bittersweet", "Broken Hearted Savior", and "Circle".

WEIRD AL YANKOVIC: THE ALPOCALYPSE TOUR: October 21
"Weird Al" Yankovic, the undisputed king of pop culture parody, has sold more comedy recordings than any other artist in history. In a career spanning nearly three decades, he has amassed 30 Gold and Platinum albums, 7 Gold and Platinum-certified home videos and 3 Grammy Awards (with 11 nominations!). The tour is in support of Yankovic's return to demolish the pop landscape with his latest full-length studio album, Alpocalypse.

KEB MO: November 7
A native of South Los Angeles, singer-songwriter and guitarist Keb' Mo's music is a living link to, and a very modern update of the Delta Blues. Across 10 acclaimed releases since 1994, his music owes as much to contemporary singer-songwriters like Bonnie Raitt or Jackson Browne as to the spirit of blues musicians like Robert Johnson that dwells in his work. His distinctive sound embraces pop, rock, folk and jazz, as well as the blues. The common threads running through his work are wit, humor and great storytelling. Over and over he demonstrates the power of music to convey human experience and emotional weight. A 3-time Grammy Award winner with 4 more nominations and 10 Blues Music Awards to his credit, Keb Mo is the not to miss music event of the season!

ARLO GUTHRIE: November 11
'Here Comes the Kid' - A Tribute to Woody Guthrie's 100th Birthday
Arlo Guthrie was born with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other, in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York in 1947. He is the eldest son of America's most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease. He grew up surrounded by dancers and musicians: Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman and Lee Hays (The Weavers), Leadbelly, Cisco Houston, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, all of whom were significant influences on Arlo's musical career. Guthrie gave his first public performance in 1961 at age 13 and quickly became involved in the music that was shaping the world. Arlo practically lived in the most famous venues of the "Folk Boom" era.

EDDIE MONEY: February 2
Born Edward Joseph Mahoney, Money initially attended the New York Police Academy with intent to follow in his father's footsteps and become a New York City Police Officer. Money's growing interest with the world of rock and roll clashed with the authoritative structure of the Academy, and Money found himself longing to become a rock musician. Deciding to try a career in music, Money relocated to the San Francisco Bay area. In 1977, he released his self-titled debut album, and became almost an instant star. With four platinum and two gold albums to date, Money has had 24 hits on Top 100 Billboard charts including "Two Tickets to Paradise", "Baby Hold On", "Shakin", and "Take Me Home Tonight". As the years have passed, Money's blue-collar brand of Rock n Roll has managed to transcend generations and continues to move audiences today. Along with having sold more than 28 million records, Money's songs have appeared in dozens of movies and television shows, and have recently been included in hit video games like "Grand Theft Auto" and "Guitar Hero."

The Dorsey band had seventeen number one hits with his orchestra in the 1930s and 1940s including: "Boogie Woogie", "I'll Never Smile Again", "Song of India", and "The Music Goes 'Round and Around". Frank Sinatra achieved his first success as a vocalist in the Tommy Dorsey band and claimed he learned breath control from watching Dorsey play trombone. Today's orchestra features vocalists in the same great tradition. Terry Myers picks up the baton of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra following the legendary Buddy Morrow. While the faces have changed, the songs remain the same and the band plays on.

2012/2013 COMEDY SERIES

NORM MACDONALD: September 23
Perhaps best known for his offbeat delivery of "the fake news" on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update for five seasons, Norm MacDonald is a major comedic presence. Aside from his notable characterizations of Bob Dole and Burt Reynolds, MacDonald proved that his acerbic wit and writing were not to be contained to just the small screen. MacDonald starred in the film Dirty Work, which he also co-wrote; and, as the voice of Lucky the Dog in the Eddie Murphy hit, in Dr. Doolittle. Macdonald was also seen in Billy Madison with Adam Sandler, and in Milos Foreman's Academy Award-nominated The People Vs. Larry Flint.  A native of Quebec City, Canada, MacDonald began his stand-up career in comedy clubs throughout Canada. Upon moving to Los Angeles, he became a writer on the ABC hit series, Roseanne.

These timeless classics are enjoyed by young and old alike in sold-out concert halls across America.

RALPHIE MAY: October 19
Voted one of Variety's "10 Comics to Watch", Ralphie May has filmed a record-setting three separate 1-hour Comedy Central Specials in the past three consecutive years, all of which were among the networks most highly-rated. He filmed a new special on October 1, 2011 at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, proving that Ralphie's relatable comedic genius is in higher demand than ever. Since his debut on season one of "Last Comic Standing," audiences can't get enough of the larger than life comedian. He has a no nonsense point of view and the ability to connect with a diverse audience by pointing out society's hypocrisies. Ralphie doesn't shy away from touchy topics or ethnic jokes, nor does he bite his tongue when society suggests, because he sincerely believes that as long as what he's saying is true, people need to hear it. On the small screen, Ralphie has worked as a writer and producer on ESPN's "Mohr Sports" starring Jay Mohr and performed stand-up on numerous late night talk shows including four appearances on CBS's "The Late Late Show w/ Craig Kilborn" as well as eleven appearances on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." He has appeared on "The Man Show" and MTV's "Bash" as well as guest-starred on NBC's "Whoopie." As if that's not enough, he's also one of a handful of comedians to have received a standing ovation on "The Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno."

RON WHITE: November 14
Comedian Ron "Tater Salad" White is best known as the cigar smoking, scotch drinking funnyman from the "Blue Collar Comedy" phenomenon. But with two Grammy nominations, a Gold Record, three of the top rated one-hour specials in Comedy Central history, a book that appeared on the New York Times Best Seller List, and CD and DVD sales of over 10 Million units, Ron has established himself as a star in his own right.  Ron has always been a storyteller; from the time he was a boy growing up in a small town in the middle of Texas oil country to selling windows for a living in Arlington to performing in sold-out theaters and arenas as a headlining comedian all across the country. For two decades he lived the life of a struggling comedian bouncing around to comedy clubs and driving to gigs in his beat-up Nissan pickup truck. In short, he paid his dues.

He was named Stand-Up Comedian of the Year by the American Comedy Awards in 1999 and has received a Gemini Award nomination for his superb televised performance at The Montreal Comedy Festival in 2000.  John has also enjoyed a long acting career in both television and film. Duets, starring Gwenyth Paltrow, Dear God, starring Greg Kinnear, and Junior, starring Arnold Schwarzeneger are just a few of John's film credits. He was a series regular on the hit series Parker Lewis Can't Lose, and starred as the car-jack victim in the final episode of Seinfeld. John can be seen as the lovable 'Mr. Bumpo' in Artisan Entertainment's The Punisher starring Thomas Jane and John Travolta.

THE CAPITOL STEPS: February 1
Enjoy a hilarious evening of American political satire and song parodies with the nationally acclaimed Capitol Steps. The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom ("Don't quit your day job!"), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. Since they began in 1981, the Capitol Steps have recorded 27 albums, including "Springtime for Liberals". They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 4 times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their "Politics Takes a Holiday" radio specials.  They'll be performing songs from their latest albums "I'm So Indicted" and "Springtime for Liberals", as well as other current issues in the news. The show promises to hit both sides of the aisle and the songs will change with the scandal of the day. So, if something big happens in the news, you can run to the Capitol Steps show and find out exactly what rhymes with it!
