Brandon fire displaces family of six

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, members of the Rutland Disaster Action Team of the Vermont & the New Hampshire Upper Valley American Red Cross were on the scene of a house fire at 6 Rossiter Street in Brandon, Vt. where a family of six has been displaced. The Red Cross will be providing financial assistance to help with food, clothing and other items lost in the blaze. The impacted family will be staying with relatives.
Upon first responders arrival they found fire coming from the living room area of the building with flames coming out the adjacent windows. All residents had evacuated prior to the arrival of the FD due to the presence of working smoke detectors on the main floor of the building. They were advised no one was left within the structure and attacked the fire from outside in hopes that it did not spread to nearby homes. Fire Chief Roman Wdowiak called the VSP for an origin and cause investigation.
Fire Investigators from the State Police and Division of Fire Safety responded to the scene on Aug. 27 to investigate. The investigation found the cause to be the knocking over of a full spectrum light that had been in use that was positioned adjacent to the couch. It appeared to have been knocked over by the owners cats inadvertently.
One of the occupants who found the initial fire starting on the couch directly in contact with the fallen lamp had been awoken by the smoke detector. Had she not been alerted her and the other occupants would have likely sustained serious bodily injury or death as result of this fire and in this case the detectors saved the life of three occupants.
The building damage and contents estimated of $250,000.00 was a total loss. There were no reported injuries as a result of this fire.
All emergency assistance provided by the Red Cross is provided without charge.
