Vt.’s first bear hunting season starts Sunday

(AP) _ Bear hunting season in Vermont is underway.
The first of the state's two bear hunting seasons begins Sunday, Sept. 8 and will run through Nov. 15. Bear hunters must get a special bear tag for the early season.
The later hunting season runs Nov. 16-24. The tag for the later season comes with a regular hunting license.
The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says the second season was extended this year because the state has too many bears. Biologists estimate Vermont has just over 6,000 bears. The optimum number is from 4,500 to 6,000.
Last year hunters took 618 bears.
