Deadly crash in Hancock investigated

HANCOCK - On Sept. 25 at approx. 1:23 p.m. Vermont State Police, DMV Commercial Vehicle Inspectors, and Hancock Fire Dept. were dispatched to a report of an accident involving a cement mixer truck on Route 125 in Hancock. The operator of the truck, later identified as Jason Barton, age 35 from Winooski, was air lifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center with serious injuries.

The passenger in the truck, Michael Thompson age 45 from Bristol, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

Preliminary investigation showed that the truck was traveling east on Route 125 and was loaded with concrete on the way to a job site. Upon coming down a long downhill section and taking a curve in the roadway, control of the truck was lost and it overturned and went off the roadway, knocking down several trees before coming to rest partially back in the roadway.

The truck sustained extensive damage making it a total loss. Route 125 was closed for 7.5 hours while the crash was investigated, the wreckage was removed, and the roadway was cleaned up.

This crash remains under investigation.
