The Ice-Out Hut was place on the Grist Mill Pond, Saturday Feb.
4, officially beginning this winter's contest. Barbara Ashworth,
Chad Aston and Red Glaze helped with the launch.
The Killington-Pico Rotary Club each year engages in several
fundraising projects. The proceeds from our fundraisers help
support local, national and international charities.
The Ice-Out contest is one such fundraiser. The object of the
contest is for the ticket purchaser to guess when the ice will 'go
out' on the pond. The moment of Ice-Out is determined when a
72-pound concrete block (housed in the Ice-Out Hut) drops through
the melting ice in the spring. A timing device determines the exact
moment of Ice-Out.
Participants who place a guess could win up to $20,000 (limited by
state law). This is a 50/50 event, meaning 50% of the proceeds will
be the winning prize, and the remainder will go toward the club's
charities.
Each guess is $5. Tickets may be purchased at Grist Mill
Restaurant, Sun Up Bakery, Liquid Art, Sushi Yoshi, Domenic's
Pizzeria, Moguls, Northern Ski Works, Summit Lodge, Slopeside
Restaurant, Greenbriar Gift Shop, Mountain Meadows Lodge, Past Pot
Restaurant, Base Camp Outfitters and The Killington Deli.
Hint: Last spring Ice-Out occurred on the morning of April 15, 2011
at 11:13 and 53 seconds.
