The 5th annual Killington Hay Festival, with its signature
collection of giant hay animals, officially kicked off Labor Day
weekend, just as the Killington Classic Motorcycle Rally rolled
The Killington Hay Festival is a five-week celebration of the
Vermont harvest, and features a robust portfolio of special events
including the Motorcycle Rally, Restaurant Week, Killington
Resort Brewfest, a charity 5K Run/Walk and the Spartan Beast
"The Hay Festival has grown to become an annual fall tradition in
New England, appealing to families from across the state and
country," says Suzie Dundas, Killington's director of Economic
Development and Tourism. "Our festival, like our community, is back
and stronger than ever after Hurricane Irene, with an exciting
calendar of events to highlight how much we've grown."
Hurricane Irene interrupted the start of the 2011 Hay Festival,
but town residents, officials and businesses rallied to put on a
shortened festival following heroic recovery efforts last year.
Now, as the town and the state continues to recover from Hurricane
Irene's resulting decrease in tourism, promotion of the 2012
foliage season is more important than ever.
"Our Hay Festival offers something for everyone, from extreme
obstacle course racing to a family-friendly run/walk, or a
laid-back restaurant week, followed by a weekend of delicious beer
tasting at Killington Resort," adds Dundas.
Highlights of the 2012 Killington Hay Festival include:
• A scavenger hunt through the winding roads
and across the mountains of Killington to find 30+ giant hay
sculptures including a giraffe, a rare white tiger and a true
Killington black bear.
• The first-ever Killington Restaurant Week,
featuring fixed-price dinner menus at about a dozen participating
restaurants throughout town.
• The Killington Classic Motorcycle Touring
Rally, offered five days of touring, social events, an outdoor
concert and BBQ & vendor village. Monday's Labor Day event
included a special "Irene: One Year Stronger" regional tour,
guiding guests on a 50-mile route through the hardest hit
• The Killington Spartan Beast Race - an
obstacle course race across the terrain of Killington Mountain. The
event also includes social events and parties throughout Killington
the weekend of September 21-23.
