Letter to the Editor, Liz Blum

Dear Editor,

The management of the United States Postal Service has decided to close our local processing facility in White River Junction along with many other national facilities. Not only that, they want to eliminate Saturday service, universal delivery, overnight mail, close 3,700 post offices and eliminate workers.

The financial crisis in the postal service was caused by a law passed by Congress in 2006 that required the USPS to pre-fund 75 years worth of pension and retiree health benefits in just 10 years.  What other business or government agency bears such a burden?

Congress can fix this crisis just as they created it, but it is up to us to make sure they and the post master general hear our voices. We can stop this assault on  a vital public service and on our neighbors, the postal employees.

Please let the managers know that we will not tolerate the closing of our local processing plant and 15 other post offices in Vermont on which we, our families, neighbors and local businesses depend on.
