AJGA returns to Killington

Green Mountain National Golf Course to host Killington Junior Golf Championship, June 25-28
The American Junior Golf Association will return to the Killington area for the third year when Green Mountain National Golf Course hosts 144 players for the Killington Junior Golf Championship, June 25-28. Junior golfers from around the United States and five other countries will travel to compete in this 54-hole stroke play event.
In 2011, Jake Shuman of Needham, Mass., and Isabel Southard of Sharon, Mass., each earned a victory. Despite it being his first AJGA Open event, Shuman held a five-stroke lead to win in the Boys Division. Southard finished with a 5-over-par 218 to win her first AJGA event. Although neither champion will return to defend their title, Thomas La Morte of Haworth, N.J., Alice Chen of Princeton, N.J., and Vinh-Hop Ngo of Newton, Mass., all top-5 finishers in 2011, will return hoping to build on their previous success.
A shotgun practice round will be held Monday, June 25, at 2 p.m. First-round play will begin Tuesday, June 26, with first- and second-round tee times running from 7 - 8:50 a.m. (1st wave) and 11:40 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. (2nd wave) off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at Green Mountain National Golf Course. Following a cut after the second round, final-round tee times will run from 7 - 8:50 a.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees on Thursday, June 28. An awards ceremony will immediately follow Thursday's final round. Guests are welcome to attend and admission is free.
Prior to the event, an 18-hole TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifier will be held Sunday, June 24, at the Green Mountain National Golf Course. TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifiers give juniors an opportunity to "play their way in" to coinciding AJGA Open tournaments or build status for entry into a future event. The TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifier Series offers opportunities for AJGA juniors at approximately 50 AJGA Open events.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,500 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.
