Shortly before 4:30 p.m. on August 12, State Police were
dispatched to a single vehicle injury crash on Route 7 in
Dorset. This crash occurred directly across from the location
of the Dorset Horse Show and Beebe Farms. The crash was reported by
a passing motorist, who stopped to assist moments after it
occurred.
The responding Trooper found the vehicle involved to be off the
southbound lane of Route 7. It was on fire and soon became fully
engulfed. The occupants, operator Jeffrey Fleming, age 30 from
Rutland, and his passenger Monica Figueira, were already out of the
vehicle.
Fire personnel from Danby/Mt Tabor and Dorset quickly arrived on
scene. An initial attempt to extinguish the fire with a portable
extinguisher was not successful, but the fire was soon out.
Rescue crews from Manchester arrived and transported both occupants
from the scene. Each was injured, but not critically,
although Fleming was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt.
Initial investigation indicates Fleming fell asleep at the wheel
and drifted across then off the road. The vehicle then struck
a culvert. The vehicle was completely destroyed from the crash and
fire.
This crash is still being investigated, no criminal action
is anticipated.
