Dear Editor,
Big CONGRATULATIONS are in order to Joe DeSena, his organizing
and support team, Killington Resort and the Town of Killington for
having one of the most successful Summer Events in our history as a
resort community.
Over the years, we have seen the likes of the Vermont Jazz
Festival (Ray Charles playing to the slopes of Snowshed),
professional Summer Stock Theater (Green Mountain Guild),
International Grand Prix Horse Show at Ramshead, Northeast
Championship Hang Gliding at the top of Pico, Hartford Ballet at
Ramshead and many other private and Town-sponsored events. It is
obvious that Joe has found a niche for today's marathoners who are
looking for more than a timed event... he has brought the
competition to the next level for all ages and abilities. The huge
number of participants ranged from four years old (minimum age) to
Senior Citizens and gave the feeling of a strong winter weekend to
our community. There was even a Canine compitition!
In speaking with a few of the Spartans after they finished the
competition, I heard a common strain... that this was the most
challenging and fun event of this type in which they had
participated. The challenges of our natural mountain terrain,
coupled with the man-made obstacles, and the ability of our
business community to service what was thousands of not only
participants but also friends and family who joined them for the
weekend all worked perfectly. Community volunteers from the
Elementary School Parent Group, the local Rotary Club, among
others, were generous with their gifts of time and efforts. Good
job, all.
I am sure we are not alone in our support of Joe and his Spartan
group, of our Resort and of our Town and Business Community. We
encourage the expansion of this weekend to include additional
events (perhaps a Winter Spartan Competition?) It was thrilling to
see the smiles on ALL the faces on the Mountain last
weekend-participants, visitors, observers, local residents and
business owners!
Sincerely,
The Montgomery Family, Killington, Vt.
