As investigation into the Benson fire on August 16 continued,
troopers from the Castleton Outpost identified a suspect vehicle.
This led to the location and identification of two suspects; Jordan
McCoy, age 17 of Brandon, and Brandon Yandow, age 15 of Leicester.
As a result of the investigation, both Yandow and McCoy have been
issued citations to appear in Rutland District Court on October 29,
to answer to the charges of Arson Second degree.
The Benson Fire Department was contacted on the evening of
August 16 concerning a fire at the former Camp EWen A Kee on Root
Pond Rd within the town of Benson. They responded and encountered
five separate fives within different buildings and huts on the camp
property. They were assisted by several area agencies including
West Haven and Orwell Fire departments.
The Benson Fire Chief subsequently requested assistance with the
origin and cause from the Vermont State Police. Fire Investigators
from both the Vermont State Police and the Division of Fire Safety
responded to the scene and worked with fire officials from the
Benson Fire Department. The initial investigation has determined
that this fire was intentionally set and included at least 5
different set fires on the premises of the former Wilderness Camp
location.
There were no injuries as a result of these fires and damage was
estimated to be under $25,000 at the time.
