Winifred “Winnie” Altwater

Winifred "Winnie" Altwater, age 91, of Pittsford, Vt. and Greenacres, Fl., passed away in her sleep on Sept. 22, 2012 as a result of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

She was born Winifred Louise McCormick on July 6, 1921 in New York, and graduated from Tenafly High School in New Jersey. She married her high school sweetheart, Joseph G. Folgosi and gave birth to their daughter Joanne after he died in World War II. Then she married Richard J. Altwater and went on to have 5 more children. Richard (Dick) passed away in June, 1981 in Vermont.

Winnie was an energetic and loving mother, participating in every way in her children's and grandchildren's lives. Much beloved by her wide circle of friends, Winnie was known for her outgoing, active nature. She not only enjoyed traveling and organizing social events, but she was involved in many women's groups over the years, often acting as president. A lifelong sports enthusiast who loved any sort of competition, she played golf three times a week until a few months before her death, often outdriving and out-scoring people years younger (much to their chagrin!). Determined and fiercely independent, she lived her life to the fullest, spending time with friends and family at every opportunity.

In 1968, the family moved from New Jersey to Killington, Vt. to run the Sherburne Gift Shop. Later they owned and ran the Killington-Pico Motor Inn.

Winifred is survived by her 6 children: Joanne Fiedler of Rancho Santa Fe; Nancy Altwater (Dennis Hudspeth) of Garfield, Washington; John Altwater (Joan) of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; Barbara Foley (Ray) of Killington, Vt.; Rodger Altwater of Tyson, Vt.; and Patricia Byrne (Stephen) of Mendon, Vt., as well as 10 grandchildren, two great grand-daughters and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be a short reception on Friday, Sept. 28 at The Vermont Inn, Route 4 in Mendon, from 2-4 p.m. Later, there will be a Memorial Celebration on July 4th weekend of 2013.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to:
