POULTNEY-Controversy struck two weeks ago when Green Mountain
College in Poultney decided to slaughter its two long-time working
oxen.
The governor, on Monday Oct. 22 agreed with the college's
choice. He too owns an operating dairy farm in Putney and
understands that this is a decision many farmers make.
Bill and Lou
are 11-year-old oxen who have worked at the college for over a
decade.
When GMC's decision to slaughter them was made public, tens of
thousands objected with letters, calls and pleas to the college to
save them.
Thus far, college officials have stood firm on their
decision regardless of the increasing publicity, saying this choice
keeps with the college's commitment to sustainable agricultural
practices.
