On Jan. 6 Vermont State Police, Hartford Police, and Hartford
Fire were dispatched to Sharhart Road at the RR Crossing by Wood
Lane for a car vs train accident at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Hartford Police and Hartford fire arrived to find the operator,
Thomas Hunt age 73 from White River Junction, out of his
vehicle. Hunt explained that he attempted to stop for the
oncoming train however he slid onto the tracks due to snow-covered
road conditions. Hunt's vehicle, a 2010 Blue Hyundai Accent GLS,
was struck on the passenger rear. Hunt's car was thrown
approximately 50 feet and came to rest against a tree down a steep
embankment. The car suffered extensive passenger side and rear
damage.
Hunt was transported to DHMC in Hanover by Hartford Rescue after
complaining of back pain.
Investigation on scene revealed that Hunt failed to stop at a
posted stop sign on the east side of the railroad tracks. Hunt
was admitted to DHMC with unspecified injuries. This accident
remains under investigation by VSP at the time this was
submitted.
