The house was fully engulfed upon arrival and it has been deemed a
"total burn." No one was home at the time. The tenants and
homeowner, Walter Klein, of Arizona, were contacted by the Red
Cross.
Klein has been renting the house to local mason Jesse Filiaut, his
wife Jackie, an their young children, who were reportedly out
enjoying the annual spring Bridgewater Raft race and so were not
injured.
Sadly, reports have confirmed that the two Filiaut family dogs
perished in the blaze.
Woodstock Fire Chief L.D. Sutherland Jr. suspects the fire may have
started as a result of faulty installation issues in the wood
stove/fireplace. The family had had a fire going in the stove
earlier in the day to stay warm. The cause remains officially
undetermined but is not considered suspicious.
A house on the same location had burned to the ground four decades
ago, the Fire Chief remembered.
