Friends help make things happen at Fletcher Memorial Library

A convenient new book drop at the rear of Ludlow's Fletcher Memorial Library is the latest improvement made possible by the work of the Friends of the Library. Library patrons can now drive into the parking lot and return books in the covered, weather-protected book drop that replaces the old drop at the front entrance.

In recent years the Friends have also raised funds to help purchase: a bench on the lawn outside the library entrance, where you can sit in the sunshine and read a book or take advantage of the library's free WiFi; comfortable wingback chairs in the Reading Room; the library's subscription to Listen Up Vermont, providing downloadable books; a family pass to Hildene; and additions to the Youth Library collection and funding for their Adopt-A-Book program.

The Friends' major fundraiser is the Book Sale, held each August under tents on the library lawn. On Saturday, Aug. 18 from 9-3, the Book Sale will once again offer a great selection of gently read books including fiction - paperback and hardcover - history, science, art, literature, gardening, cookbooks, children's books, and DVDs. Donations are welcome after July 1 (no textbooks or condensed books).

The Friends support the library through community outeach, with story hours at local daycare providers; books for the homebound; monthly "Third Thursday" programs of interest to the community; and book discussions on the fourth Thursday of the month

Summer book discussions include "Embers," a classic of European literature by Hungarian master Sandor Marai, on June 28; and a screenplay, "The White Line on Frederick Street," a Cold War drama about the building of the Berlin Wall, by Ludlow resident Thom Serrani, on July 26. Copies of discussion books are available at the library.

Upcoming Third Thursday programs include: a program on low vision, June 21 at Gill Terrace; and "The Unknown Rockwell," July 19 at the library. All programs and book discussions start at 7 p.m. and last about an hour. Park in the library lot and enter through the rear of the building, which is accessible to all.

The Friends will hold their annual membership drive in June. Membership to help support the library and its programs is only $5 for seniors (62+) and students (under 18); $10 for adult, $20 for a family; $50 patron and $100 corporate.
