Killington Mountain School’s snowboard team finds the podium

The Killington Mountain School (KMS) Snowboard Team had a busy weekend, March 9-10, collecting hardware as student-athletes found multiple podium results at Mount Snow, Okemo Mountain and Smuggler's Notch in Vermont.

On Saturday, the brother-sister combo of Joey and Maggie Leon dominated, with Maggie, 15, of Simsbury, Conn., taking silver in the Carinthia Open Mega Plaza at Mount Snow then traveling to Okemo for the Okemo Light the Night Rail Jam where she also took silver. Her brother, Joey, won the Okemo event in the 15 and under men's category.

"It was a very busy weekend for the Leon family but that didn't seem to phase either Leon rider as both brought home medals and cash from the weekend's events," said KMS Snowboard Program Director KC Gandee. "Sunday's slopestyle event included the debut of new competition runs for both Kurt Weidman '14 and DhungHa Kim '14. Weidman landed in the top spot for Junior Men with a run that included a switch underflip, half cab onto a down rail and a frontside rodeo flip. Kim sent a huge frontside 540, switch boardslide to regular and a backside rodeo, but the run wasn't clean enough to land on the podium."

The USASA Northern Vermont Series Slopestyle event on Sunday was held at Smuggler's Notch. In addition to Weidman, of Charlotte, winning Junior Men (16-17), Maggie Leon stepped up for the hardware again, winning Youth Women (14-15).
