Nov. 10-13—BARNARD—BarnArts Center for the Arts enters new territory as it stages “The Little Prince” Nov. 10-13 at the Barnard town hall. On Nov. 10, they perform a first-ever 10 a.m. arts-in-education show for area schools, as well as a 2 p.m. show for area seniors. Arrangements to see the special shows on Nov. 10 must be pre-organized through BarnArts.
Public performances are Friday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 13, 2 p.m.
Another first for BarnArts, “The Little Prince” includes a mixed cast of adults and youth. Barnard resident Mark Alloway stars as the 1940s aviator who has crashed his plane in the African desert to begin the story. The destitute aviator soon discovers an unlikely companion and savior in a young boy from another planet, the Little Prince, played by 13-year-old Robin McDonald of Lebanon, N.H.
“The Little Prince” shares his adventures across the heavens and on earth, and the aviator learns of the rose, played by 12-year-old Anya Traudt of Strafford, who grew one day on the Little Prince’s planet and ultimately caused him to venture away. In his travels through the stars, he meets up with iconic characters on different planets: a king, a business man, a lamp lighter, a geographer and a conceited man.
On earth, the Little Prince interacts with a snake, played by Marcela Williamson, who as a stereotypical mythic snake leads him astray; and with a fox, played by Aaron Michael Hodge, who atypically leads the Little Prince into an unusual friendship based on real trust.
Woodstock resident and frequent director for BarnArts, Tom Beck takes the stage for the first time in nine years as the businessman, a small but character-thick role as one of the planet people. The other four planet people roles are performed by Janet Eller and Rick Corso. Eller plays the king and the geographer, while Corso plays the lamplighter and the conceited man.
“The Little Prince” is the first collaborative directing debut of mother-daughter team Nancy Conte and Nicole Conte Stevens.
