Opening reception for “In Flanders Fields” exhibit

Friday, June 17 at 5 p.m. — RUTLAND — Chaffee Art Center announces the opening of “In Flanders Fields,” an installation by Fran Bull, running from June 10 through July 30. An artist reception will be held on Friday, June 17 from 5 to 7 p.m.
This multi-media installation—including textiles, etchings, sculpture, and text—is Fran Bull’s reflection on the famous World War I poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, and her effort to add her “silent scream to the chorus of those for whom war is anathema.”
The multi-layered exhibit speaks to varying experiences and effects of war. The “Wall of Fallen Ones” features dozens of faces encased in square pine boxes, a vertical field of the lives lost to war. Eighteen sculptures of women create, “Lysistrata and her Circle,” inspired by the play “Aristophanes” in which Greek women refused to have sex with their husbands until a peace treaty was signed to end the Peloponnesian Wars.
In addition to the artist reception on Friday, there will be three other Friday evening events.  “Impressions: A Dance Piece” choreographed by Ilene Blackman will be performed on Friday, June 24 at 6 p.m.
Vermont’s Poet Laurette Chard deNiord will give a poetic reading on Friday, July 8 at 7 p.m.
On Friday July 15, Fran Bull will present an artist talk providing in-depth insight into her installation, “In Flanders Fields.”
The exhibit and all corresponding events will be held at the Chaffee Art Center at 16 South Main Street in Rutland.
