At approximately 8:20 p.m. on Dec. 9, the Northfield Police Department received a report of some type of explosion at a residence on the corner of North Street and Maple Ave. in the town of Northfield. Further reports indicated that there were injuries, and the explosion occurred within a multiple-unit apartment building.
The Northfield Police and Fire Departments responded, as did Troopers from the Middlesex barracks. Neighboring homes were evacuated and the Vermont State Police Bomb Squad was called to assist and render the area safe. Upon initial investigation, a homemade explosive device was discovered. The Vermont State Police bombsquad rendered the device safe, and after a sweep of the scene, declared the area clear of any further danger. At that time, evacuated residents were contacted and advised that they could return home.
At approximately 9 a.m. on Dec. 10, the Vermont State Police Bomb Squad and the ATF began a warrant search of the apartment involved in the incident. During the search of the apartment, it was determined that the explosion was consistent as having been the result of a “homemade pipebomb.” Investigators have since concluded their search.
Investigation determined that five individuals were present in the apartment at the time of the incident. Four of these individuals needed medical attention as a result of the explosion. No further information about the individuals is available at this time, pending further investigation of the incident.
At this time, Investigators have determined that there is no ongoing threat or danger to the community.
The ongoing investigation has been a joint effort between the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Vermont State Police Bomb Squad, VSP Troopers from the Middlesex barracks, the FBI, and ATF.
