Hubbardton site interpreter leads hike on historic military road

Sunday, June 21 at 2 p.m. — HUBBARDTON — On Sunday, June 21, the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubbardton offers a guided hike on the Hubbardton section of the 1776 military road that led to Mount Independence in Orwell. The tour is led by site interpreter Carl Fuller and runs from 2-5 p.m.

Be prepared for hills. Some of the hike will be vigorous. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes or boots, and bring water. Meet at the battlefield visitor center. Admission is $3 for adults and free for children under 15, and includes seeing the museum.

Learn how Revolutionary War soldiers traveled overland across Vermont to get to the new American fortification at Mount Independence in Orwell. Hikers also will see the area where the first shots of the Revolutionary War Battle of Hubbardton were fired on July 7, 1777, and get a taste of what it might have been like for the soldiers traveling over this varied terrain.

This is the first of two area military road tours. On Aug. 22, join a car tour starting at Mount Independence in Orwell at 9:30 a.m. to roughly trace the route to the Hubbardton Battlefield.

The Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site preserves the location of the only Revolutionary War battle in Vermont. The site is on Monument Hill Road six miles off VT Route 30 in Hubbardton or seven miles off exit 5 on US Route 4 in Castleton. Carefully follow the signs.  The site is open Thursday through Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., and on Columbus Day, Oct. 12, the last day of the season.
