Revels Kids offered at seven sites

Jan. 25 – April 3 — Revels Kids engages children ages 6-14 in an exploration of diverse world cultures through music, dance, percussion, and storytelling. This journey of cultural traditions will truly be a celebration of the mind, soul, and spirit for children and families alike, which we hope will inspire a lifelong love of traditional music. The program runs once a week for nine weeks, and includes a Community Cultural Exchange, Immersion Day and a culminating Day of Sharing for parents and friends.

The program is being offered from Jan. 25 to April 3, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at seven sites: St. Johnsbury, Thursdays, Catamount Arts; Haverhill, Tuesdays, Court Street Arts; Bradford, Mondays, Grace Church; Vershire, Mondays, Vershire Community Center; locally in Pomfret, Wednesdays, Artistree Community Arts Center; West Lebanon, Wednesdays, Kilton Library; and Norwich, Thursdays, Upper Valley Grange.

This year, Revels Kids will be taking a trip through the arts and culture of China, Tibet, northern India, and the Middle East, ending the cultural journey at the Mediterranean Sea, 4,000 miles from where it began.

Revels Kids is honored to have Migmar Tsering, dramyin player and president of the Tibetan Association of Vermont, working with them on this journey. Members of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble (www.silkroadproject.org) will also be on hand throughout the process, including Grammy-nominated tabla player Sandeep Das (www.sandeepdas.com) and percussionist and composer Shane Shanahan (/www.shaneshanahan.com), who will be among the tradition-bearers for our Immersion Day celebration.

What might a person experience on such a grand expedition? There’s new music, dances, food, and stories to share. It will be an adventure for the five senses as participants immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the Silk Road, partaking in activities such as tai chi, calligraphy, and making dumplings.

Those who can’t commit to the nine-week Revels Kids program can still participate! Saturday, Jan. 30 marks Immersion Day, a celebration that is open to all, ages 3 years to adult. The cost to take part in this half-day event, which will take place at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. is $30.

Registration is open at revelsnorth.org/revels-kids/.
