Seventh-graders: your journey can start here

CASTLETON—The Rutland Region Workforce Investment Board’s Council on Youth is working with the middle school counselors of Castleton Village, Fair Haven, Mill River, Orwell, Benson, West Rutland, Christ the King, Proctor and Rutland Town School to organize the sixth annual Your Journey Starts Here event.

The seventh-grade career event will be held March 31, 2016, at Castleton University. It is a one-day event guided by Castleton student leaders and athletes. The event has reached about 1500 students since it started.

This year’s speaker is Alayna Westcom, crowned the 2015 Ms. Vermont. Ms. Westcom’s talent, a dramatic rendering of a scientific experiment, serves to show that science is relatable. That the objects we touch, see, and use every day have science in the background. In order to stimulate interest in STEM fields, it is important to show that science can be entertaining and exciting while being educational.

During the day, Castleton College students will also discuss their personal journey as they lead students on a campus tour and facilitate learning activities. Representatives from a variety of industries will also discuss how they have built their careers.

This has all been made possible by sponsorships totaling $7,000.
