Town of Killington to partner with Killington Resort to hold drive-in style fireworks

KILLINGTON, VT – The town of Killington has announced that it will partner with Killington Resort to hold its annual 4th of July Fireworks Celebration at Snowshed Slope. Parking and viewing will be permitted at Snowshed (Upper and Lower), Ramshead, and Killington Golf Course parking lots.

The 2020, 4th of July Fireworks follows the drive-in movie theater model. Cars will drive up Killington Road and be parked by attendants to keep 10 feet between each car. Guests may stay in their cars and trucks to watch the show, or they can bring a chair to place within arm’s length of their vehicle.

“While many things have changed this year, it was important to maintain this tradition even if we have to alter how people view the fireworks,” said Sarah Newell, Town of Killington Recreation Director.

In years past, the Town of Killington Fireworks were held at Johnson Recreation Field. However, due to the restrictions around physical distancing, the fireworks could not remain at that location. “That’s when we turned to Killington Resort with the idea of moving the fireworks to the mountain and spreading cars out across many parking lots,” said Newell.

Guests are encouraged to Arrive, Watch (Enjoy the Fireworks Display), and Leave. Parking lots open at 8 pm, with the Fireworks Show beginning at dusk (app. 9:30/9:45). For the event to remain physically distant, tailgating and outdoor games will not be permitted; please also leave sparklers and pets at home. The event will be live streamed from the Killington Parks and Recreation Facebook page for those who are homebound and/or those who do not wish to leave their house. In conjunction with the fireworks there will be a live radio show with DJ Uncle Dave from WEXP 101.5.

While many of the Fourth of July festivities are canceled, one more tradition is continuing, but in a new way. Killington Fire Department is sponsoring a Free Grocery Giveaway on Friday, July 3 at 3 PM. This year the Killington Fire Department has turned their giving outward and has donated $10,000 to support those facing food insecurity. Instead of supporting the fire department by purchasing cooked food, they are giving away uncooked BBQ themed items. The Grocery Giveaway will take place at Castleton Lodge at Killington (formally known as the Butternut Inn), 63 Weathervane Drive, Killington.
