Vermont Institute of Natural Science announces upcoming class ‘Tip to Tail: The Art of Sketching Birds’

Sunday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m.—QUECHEE—Love birds? Love drawing and sketching? Overwhelmed by the idea of sketching something that moves? VINS has the class for you!

Join this four-week class with instructor Sandy McDermott to develop basic knowledge of bird anatomy and hone your observation and drawing skills. Each session will be devoted to a different topic related to drawing birds including bone structure, feathers, proportions and body shapes. Class will begin with inside work but be prepared for outdoor time if weather permits. We will use photos, mounted specimens and other artifacts, and live birds as our models. Challenging? Yes, but you can do this! Sketching experience is not required. The amount of information will be restricted to basics. Keeping it simple is key to creating a foundational path to success.

Classes will take place at the VINS Nature Center in Quechee on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Jan. 26 – Feb. 23 (no class Feb. 16). If a weather cancellation occurs, a make-up class will take place on Sunday, March 1.

Bring your current sketchpad (newsprint pads not recommended), drawing pencils, a white eraser (General’s Tri-Tip eraser recommended) and a kneaded eraser. Drawing pens are welcome as well as any tool you enjoy sketching with.

The class costs $125 for the general public and  $110 for VINS members. Register at conta.cc/2s1nxs3
