VPT presents Mae West’s ‘The Drag’

Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m.—RANDOLPH—Vermont Pride Theater will present a staged reading of “The Drag: A Homosexual Comedy in Three Acts by Mae West” at the Chandler Center for the Arts.  West, an early supporter of gay rights, considered her play to be a “comedy-drama of life.” Set in the repressed 1920s, it’s the riveting story of two love triangles which cross the lines of social and economic class and defy the sexual norms of the day. During its opening run in 1927, the play was shut down after only 10 performances. Reviewers who were scandalized by the play’s open treatment of the difficulties of living a gay life described the drama as “brutal” “vulgar” “dirty,” “the worst possible play” which “strikes at the heart of decency.”  Clearly there’s something for everyone here.

Tickets are available now, online at chandler-arts.org or at the box office 802-728-9878.

Adults are $22 in advance, $25 at the box office on the day of the show and students are $15 in advance, $18 at the box office on the day of the show. Student groups of 10 or more can purchase $8 tickets by calling the box office.

This is VPT’s 9th annual winter benefit. The proceeds this year going to Vermont CARES, which works throughout the state to prevent the spread of the HIV virus and to connect those with HIV/AIDS with culturally sensitive medical care providers.  The Chandler is located at 71 No. Main St. in Randolph.
