Winter tree identification program offered at Vermont’s only national park

Saturday Jan. 25 at 10 a.m.—WOODSTOCK—Discover what winter has to offer at Vermont’s national parks – from art to animal tracking, science to snow sculpting! Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Woodstock offers a variety of free programming for the public during the colder months.

On Jan. 25, retired Windsor County Forester Jon Bouton will present on how to identify common Vermont trees and shrubs during the winter months, focusing on their twig, bud, needle, and bark characteristics in the park’s Forest Center. An indoor discussion will be followed by an outdoor trek through the park and a brown bag lunch.

“These winter workshops are a great opportunity to get out and about during the heart of winter – stretch your legs, your mind, and your creativity,” said Chief of Interpretation and Education Stephanie Kyriazis. “All of the programs are taught by local experts or park rangers, are free of charge, and offer participants a deeper dive into the science and stewardship of your local national parks during the quiet time of year.”

Warm beverages and light refreshments will be provided at all programs. Participants should dress for the weather and bring a water bottle and snacks. Snowshoes and traction devices will be available to borrow at all programs that venture outdoors, or participants are welcome to bring their own equipment.

Many of the park’s winter programs are part of the Working Woodlands Workshop series, co-sponsored by Vermont Coverts and the Vermont Woodlands Association. Registration is recommended for all programs, but required for the space-limited art workshops. To register, call 802-457-3368 x222 or email leah_marshall@partner.nps.gov. For more information visit nps.gov/mabi.

Visitors are also welcome to enjoy the trails on their own during winter. Most of the trails at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park are groomed and maintained for cross-country skiing by the Woodstock Nordic Center, which charges a day use fee. Call 802-457-6674 for pass details and information about ski conditions.
